I'm lovin' this breezy Florida fall with temperatures in the low to mid 80's! We have less humidity and cool breezes. We're still wearing flip flops and shorts but finally, "the runnin' is easy."
My cool weather goals are to increase my mileage. Yesterday I went out for a run at 7:20 p.m. My summer goal was to run a 5k a day. However, Meka the sidebar trainer, suggested I take one day off a week for recovery. Mostly I took Sundays as my day off from running. Mid-summer I realized I had a mental block of heading home by the time my 3.1 miles neared.
With the cooler breezes and drop in humidity I am increasing my mileage each week. Recommendations are an increase of 10 - 15% per week which decreases your chance of injury.
Last night I ran 3.56 miles and would have gone a bit longer but it was too dark. And although I was feeling good, I had reached my 15% goal.
Increasing my mileage will help me increase my weekly mileage! But it will also be a tool in preventing holiday weight gain. The season of feasting draws near and I do not want to be uncomfortable in my clothes for the next 3 months!
How about you? What are your running goals for this season and how do you avoid the dreaded holiday weight gain? If you live in a colder climate do you have to alter your running program?
I read an interesting article here on the benefits of a shorter stride.
Happy Running!

Great article on shorter strides, it answered a few of my questions about avoiding knee and hip injuries.
ReplyDeleteI'm finding it hard to run on my own (without a friend to run with). Any suggestions? and how do you run by yourself so often?
My goals are to run several times a week and really listen to my body. If my knees hurt...I rest, if I'm bloated, achy and crampy due to my monthly cycle...I rest. The important this for me is to move as many days a week as I can and enjoy the movement!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to do the interview! Do you still have my first response? If not, send me the questions and I'll re-submit them. (((hugs)))
ReplyDeleteMy goals are to increase my speed and try to keep up 5 miles regularly on the treadmill as it gets colder. I will SO miss outside running!
ReplyDelete:) So proud of you!!! Now when are we running together??? After a forced week off (forced to take my own advice) I am now hitting times in my runs that I haven't seen in a long time. Sometimes even I need to be reminded of my own advice!Way to go Melanie!!! Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteI came across your blog by accident but so glad I found you. What an encouragement you are to me. I do not have a runner body but I set a goal in July to run a 5K by October. I couldn't even run 2 mintues when I started but on October 2nd, I ran my first 5K. It was a very small run for Lupus and actually ended up being shorter than the 5K they had claimed. I did it though! I have still been running since then...I run 2.25 miles 3 times a week and then do the Jillian shred 1-2 times a week. I live in the NW so the rains will be here soon. I am hoping to be able to run at least a few days, even if it is in the rain. Thanks for such a great blog! Can't wait to read more!
