I am a mom who runs. I run errands. I run the vacuum cleaner. I run the dishwasher. I run kids places. I run the household.

I also run on roads, on trails and on beaches ~ my favorite!

Run alongside me as we inspire, encourage and motivate one another to run Farther, run Faster and run Fearless.

The First Mile

Can I just admit something? Rarely do I enjoy the first mile of any run.
There. I've said it.

In the first tenth of the first mile, I'm feeling pretty good. I'm glad I'm on the road again. I feel ready to tackle whatever my daily running goal is. And I feel all good about my discipline!

But somewhere around .14 all of the uncomfortableness of running hits hard. My legs feel tired. I hear myself breathing.
Nothing feels good. Nothing feels right.

In that first mile, the discomfort is what could keep me from the second mile. But it doesn't.

Why? Because I've got something stronger than discomfort in my favor.
And that's the decision. The decision to keep going.

You see, I've already pushed through the discomfort of the first mile enough times to know that the decision to carry on overcomes the discomfort. And I know from past success that once I make it through the first mile, it's a done deal to complete what I've started.
Very rarely do I cut a run shorter than what I planned before I even put on my running shoes.

A made up mind is no match for momentary discomfort.

Is the first mile a challenge for you? What pulls you through?

  1. Yes, the first mile is a challenge - I feel like I hit my stride during the second or sometimes not even until the third.

I keep telling myself to just get through the first mile - sounds boring, but it works!!
